How much fun do you have at work? When Dawn Engelbrecht and Bev Parsons bought the Safe Kids in Daily Supervision franchise system from the original franchisor in July 2006 they knew big changes and lots of work were ahead of them if they wanted to achieve their dream of SKIDS becoming the #1 Out-of-School care provider in New Zealand. Armed with a combined 16 years experience, a truckload of enthusiasm, the support of their families, and belief in themselves, Dawn and Bev signed up with a business coach. Every aspect of the business has been scrutinized for areas of improvement tailoring them specifically for the Out-of-School care industry. From the preparation of the children¡¦s afternoon tea, to the new Logo and staff uniforms, the goal has been ¡¥quality-driven¡¦ standardization for the programmes and user-friendly systems for the franchisee. Key to it all is ensuring that everyone involved in a SKIDS programme has fun along the way, be it the children, the staff or the Franchisee. Since July 2006 SKIDS have; *opened 25 new programmes, *welcomed 15 new franchise owners, *joined the New Zealand Franchise Association, *achieved 2nd place in their category in the 2007 & 2008 Franchise Awards, as well as being finalists in the 2008 Manukau Business Awards *set up business alliances with all major banks resulting in the SKIDS franchise being a pre-approved Franchise system *totally revamped their website www.skids.co.nz including a dedicated Franchisee intranet system with online training programmes, downloadable documentation and regular discussion forums. *Provided workshops in Finance, Sales and Marketing for Franchisees *Developed an intensive training programme for new Franchisees to ensure they fully understand the demanding and responsible roles of looking after the children in their care. Early childhood care in New Zealand saw huge growth during the 1990¡¦s and its counterpart in Out-of-School care is undergoing a similar experience now. ¡¥Only 13% of children aged 5-13 attend formal After School or Holiday programmes compared with 94% of pre-school children¡¦ ¡V The OSCAR Foundation, February 2007. A growing population, more parents than ever in the workforce, demand from communities for quality Out-of-School care, and support from numerous government agencies have fuelled this growth. Many school or parent run programmes have realized that going it alone is not easy with the ever increasing red-tape being put on small businesses and SKIDS head office is continually fielding calls as schools enquire about SKIDS taking over existing programmes. Other schools are finding parent surveys overwhelmingly in favour of establishing well-run CYFS accredited programmes in their schools. Parents and Principals alike are concerned that pick-upsby local off-site care providers sometimes see children still waiting for vans at the school gate until just before 4pm. SKIDS is now looking to establish SKIDS programmes in primary schools throughout the country. A SKIDS franchise investment is $28000 plus GST (finance options available to approved purchasers) and includes a school site leased for five years, full training and assistance with enrolling children as well as recruiting and training staff.
